(Cricket news) West Indies secured the T20 series against England as the hosts won the 5th T20 by 17 runs. England had come back into the series with an inspiring performance by captain Moeen Ali in the fourth match but in the final it was Jason Holder who led the hosts to a series win.
West Indies won the toss and chose to bat first as they had done well with the bat in the series so far. The openers scored 58 runs in the powerplay as Kyle Mayers hit 31 of 19 deliveries, Adil Rashid took the first wicket of the match right after the powerplay. Romario Shepherd could not stand an over of Liam Livingstone as he was dismissed after 4 balls. Captain Kieron Pollard hit 41 runs off 25 deliveries as Rovman Powell hit 4 sixes to give the team the ideal finish.
England bowlers could not get a wicket after Rashid bowled Nicholas Pooran in the 15th over. Rashid is now the leading wicket taker for England in T20’s with 81 wickets in 70 innings of which 22 wickets have come against West Indies. He kept the economy under 5 as he gave away 17 runs in 4 overs with 2 wickets.
England batters needed to put in the effort like they did in the last match, the openers departed by the fourth over and they needed the middle order to take over. James Vince finally got to hit a few boundaries in the series as he hit his second half century in T20 matches as the team got back to their feet. Akeal Hosein again hit the team with a huge blow as he took out Vince and Philip Salt in successive overs. Hosein registered his best figures in a T20 by taking 4 wickets for 30 runs.
The final show was yet to come as England needed 20 runs in 6 balls and the ball was with Holder. Sam Billings was on the crease and had scored 40 runs in 26 balls alongside Chris Jordan. A no ball in the first delivery gave the visitors a run with an additional delivery, Holder created history by becoming the first from the West Indies men’s side to take a hat trick in the shortest format of the game. He also took a wicket in the next delivery after the hat trick to become the fourth bowler to take 4 wickets in 4 balls in T20 matches.
Nicholas Pooran finished as the highest run getter with 164 runs in 5 matches and Holder finished with 15 wickets. He was the only bowler to take more than 10 wickets in the series, West Indies were on top of the bowling and batting charts. Both teams will now play in the 3 match Test series which begins in a week.
