Miami —  The Miami Heat suffered the greatest lopsided loss in franchise playoff history in Game 4 against the Cleveland Cavaliers, bringing their season to a depressing end.  The Cavaliers swept the Eastern Conference first-round series in four games after dominating the Heat on Monday night, winning by an incredible 138-83.

The previous worst playoff loss, which was 121-84 in Game 3 two days before, was surpassed by the 55-point loss.  It was the most lopsided playoff series in NBA history overall, with a 122-point margin.

“This was definitely not what we were expecting,” said Heat guard Tyler Herro following the game.  For us, the last two games have been extremely difficult.  This performance is just embarrassing; there are no justifications for it.  This is undoubtedly a humble moment, and much more needs to be done in the future.

It is obvious that big changes are coming as the Heat look to the future.  Team captain Bam Adebayo said, “There are going to be lots of changes this summer,” expressing his excitement for the off-season.  I think it’s obvious how the man with the gray hair works.  Just be ready for that, then.

In Game 4, the Heat had a tiny window of opportunity when they led 3-2, but the Cavaliers swiftly took over and jumped out to a 15-3 advantage that grew to 28-8 and then 43-14.  The Heat’s inability to stay competitive caused their performance to collapse.

Despite the disappointing result, Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra made an effort to set the scene for the season by discussing the team’s struggles, including the depressing 10-game losing streak, Jimmy Butler’s suspension issues, and finishing as the 10th seed in the Eastern Conference.

He bemoaned the potential he thought his team had, but he also commended the Cavaliers for their outstanding play.  “In these last two games, they left us behind,” Spoelstra remarked.  “Unfortunately, these two home games and a 4-0 whitewash are our last memories.  Throughout the year, this crew showed a lot of character and tenacity.  I treasured the time I spent with them, particularly during the final eight weeks when we battled valiantly.

Although it is difficult to make amends today, the Heat left Cleveland feeling confident.

Despite losing the series 2-0, they felt they were on the verge of something big because they had rallied from a 19-point deficit in Game 2 to cut it to just two points with four minutes left.

Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson said, “It’s pretty incredible what the Heat accomplished as a 10 seed, winning two play-in games on the road.”  “I have the highest respect for their behavior, and we rested for seven or eight days prior to this round.  They play with class, win or lose.  I have a great deal of respect for their organization, coaching staff, and players in their locker room because they are humble.
