(Football news) Harry Maguire could consider leaving Manchester United in the summer transfer window after limited opportunities in the first team in the 2022/23 season. The 30 year old defender has made only 16 appearances this season as Erik ten Hag has preferred the partnership of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane while Maguire has fallen further down the pecking order due to Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw.

Speaking to The Times, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said “No-one would be happy with this situation. He is not as well. He trains always on the best levels, so with 100% effort. So he handles that situation well and he’s in that manner and in his captaincy he’s important for the squad. He has high competition there [at centre-back] with Raphael Varane, who’s fantastic. Let’s say I’m happy he’s here and when we needed him he did his job. But it’s also a decision he has to make.”

Maguire was signed by Manchester United from Leicester City in 2019 for a word record fee for a defender (£80m) and his contract will expire in 2025. Despite his part time role at the Red Devils, Maguire has been a regular with the England national team, playing all five games at the World Cup in 2022 and will feature for the national team in the upcoming Euro qualifiers. However, manager Gareth Southgate has said he’s concerned about Maguire’s lack of playing time at Manchester United.
