(Motorsports news) The seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes team started a concept revamp that was partially prepared for the Monaco Grand Prix after realizing early in the season that its W14 car was not competitive. However, the team soon realized that even this year’s efforts were insufficient, and it is already developing a more significant redesign for its 2024 vehicle.
This season, Mercedes focused a lot of its efforts on attempting to better understand the direction of growth that was required in order to lock in the gains that were required. And while that meant there was a lot of learning to be done throughout the campaign, Hamilton believes that rather than just adopting Red Bull’s ideas word for word, it was a necessary price to pay.
Hamilton says that Aston Martin’s ups and downs in 2023 while chasing a car that was a lot like Red Bull’s showed how hard it is to advance in Formula One. Hamilton responded, “The thing is, with the timeline you have, and the limited resources you have, you can’t just throw it away and start from scratch,” when asked if Mercedes had ever considered scrapping the present design and creating a Red Bull clone from scratch. You can’t start by copying an automobile.
“Observe the astons.” Their attempt to imitate an automobile was not successful. That is not how simple it is. You must attempt to take the best elements and, by trial and error, just try to add new elements. However, you can see that they are also afraid of making the wrong adjustment or changing too much. “We have a huge gap to close, so we need to be adding performance consistently week after week, and we have higher targets than ever before.” It becomes quite difficult as a result.
Because of his excellent performance at the US Grand Prix, Hamilton was able to follow world champion Max Verstappen for a significant portion of the race, which provided him with an excellent opportunity to gauge the Red Bull RB19’s strength. About what he saw that day, he commented, “It does everything well.” It shares a lot of characteristics with my 2020 automobile. Super-stable. They are operating at full capacity.
It appears to be in the same type of window that we used to have, which is ideal for drivers because it allows them to fully utilize their unique skills. And Hamilton thinks Verstappen’s ability to “chill” at the front of Formula One races during his stellar 2023 campaign stems from that edge. “They always had a tenth or two at the very least on us, even though we were the closest in Austin,” he remarked.
You may view Max’s lap timings and some of his data; most of the time, he is lounging at the front. I don’t believe he has exerted much effort this year. “I don’t think he was sweating, even when we were chasing him in Austin.” I believe he was simply in charge of it. “The car drives farther when you are in that position, when you have performance and can back off. It’s great to be there, and the tires have more tread. You are at a beautiful spot.
In the end, they deserve it since they did a fantastic job. On the other hand, we were always pursuing.
