Every professional athlete must consider what to do once their playing career is over. The answer was obvious to Jamal Mashburn. He was prepared to welcome life outside of basketball after an 11-year NBA career.
Even though Mashburn’s name isn’t typically the first that springs to mind when thinking of NBA All-Stars, his credentials are impressive. The Dallas Mavericks selected him fourth overall in the 1994 NBA Draft, and he immediately made an impression by being selected to the All-Rookie First Team. In 2003, while playing for the New Orleans Hornets, he shocked fans by averaging 22 points, six rebounds, and six assists per game. He not only earned All-Star status but was also selected to the All-NBA squad. The performance left the audience stunned and on their feet.
Unfortunately, his on-court wizardry was short-lived due to persistent knee problems. Mashburn finished with a strong finish, averaging 20.8 points per game in his final season before retiring the following season. His accomplishment puts him in a unique position alongside NBA greats like Michael Jordan, Reggie Lewis, Drazen Petrovic, Larry Bird, and Jerry West—all of whom averaged 20 points or more in their final seasons.
Mashburn’s success extends beyond hardwood floors. He has operated over 90 businesses over the years, including 38 Outback Steakhouses, 40 Papa John’s franchises, three Dunkin’ Donuts stores, and multiple auto dealerships, creating a commercial empire that would make any tycoon proud. He has dabbled in real estate and horse racing in addition to food and retail.
Mashburn’s business endeavors have paid off handsomely; according to reports, his net worth has surpassed $100 million, surpassing his almost $75 million career earnings on the court.
“Everyone can’t be endowed with a 6’8″ stature and innate athletic ability,” Mashburn said, looking back on his experience. The goal of playing professional basketball was always a means to an end for me. As a child, I practiced basketball and dreamed of being a prosperous businessman who would bring a briefcase to work.
On and off the court, he underlined the need of teamwork. “Having a talented and committed squad behind you is crucial in both basketball and life. No one works alone.
Jamal Mashburn is a remarkable example of an athlete who built a successful commercial empire off of his on-court achievements by carefully preparing for life beyond basketball. His tale serves as an example of what is possible when opportunity and determination are combined.
