Assistant coach Aashish Kapoor provides updates on two key GT bowlers

Gujarat Titans (GT), traditionally known for their formidable bowling unit, have once again relied heavily on it to notch up four wins in six matches in IPL 2025. However, one unexpected concern has emerged — Rashid Khan’s dip in form.

Rashid, long regarded as one of T20 cricket’s most consistent match-winners, has had a quiet season so far. In six matches, he has bowled 22 overs, picked up just four wickets, and has an expensive economy rate of 9.77, with an average of 53.75.

GT assistant coach Aashish Kapoor, who has been closely working with the Afghanistan legspinner, remains optimistic that Rashid will soon find his rhythm again.

“Whether it’s a batsman or a bowler, when you’re doing well over a period, you can develop certain bad habits with your basics,” Kapoor explained. “In Rashid’s case, he was struggling with back pain last year and had to undergo surgery. Often when you’re playing through pain, you tweak your action to minimize discomfort.”

Kapoor revealed that the coaching staff identified a few areas of Rashid’s bowling that needed adjustment, particularly with his front arm.

“His front hand was closing off too early — it should be facing the batsman. He’s working on that now. Over the last couple of games, his lengths have improved. Once he picks up a few wickets and regains confidence, we’ll see the Rashid Khan we all know.”

Looking ahead to their next fixture against Delhi Capitals in Ahmedabad on Saturday, GT are also hoping for the return of another key player — Kagiso Rabada. The South African quick has been unavailable due to personal reasons, having flown home after featuring in two matches where he recorded figures of 1 for 41 and 1 for 42.

“We’re just waiting for him,” Kapoor said. “He’s dealing with some personal family matters. If those are resolved in time, he’ll be back. But at the moment, we’re unsure about the timeline. We’re hopeful.”

With Rashid working his way back to form and Rabada’s return potentially on the horizon, GT will be looking to regain full strength as the IPL 2025 season progresses.
