Gautam Gambhir, the front runner for India’s head coach role

(Cricket News) India’s World-cup winning batter Gautam Gambhir is being considered as the front runner for taking up role of India’s next head coach. Gambhir is continuously in talks with the BCCI and there are reports that suggests that the deal has already been done and the announcements would be made soon.

Gambhir has just mentored the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title and is expected to take up the vacant seat post the end of Rahul Dravid’s tenure next month after the T20 World Cup. He has been seen as a very strong personality and is being considered as one of the best option for the high-pressure role.

The buzzword inside the coach selection circle is ‘desh ke liye karna hai’. Both the BCCI and Gambhir share the belief that ‘we must do it for the country.’ And the conversation between Jay Shah and the India legend is understood to be centred around this idea. Gambhir is known for wearing his nationalism on his sleeve which might just make him take up the role.

It will be not be easy for Gambhir to take up the role of India’s head coach. He has just moved from the Lucknow Super Giants to the Kolkata Knight Riders. He is also a successful cricket expert and currently has a young family. Gambhir is believed to be weighing all the options before making a final call on the offer.

Gambhir has told people close to him that he is considering the approach. Even Shah Rukh Khan is aware of this. Monday was the last day for sending in the application for the post and it is likely he has formally applied for the role, although there is no confirmation as yet from any quarters.

The Indian head coach job is one of the most difficult job opportunities that one can sign up for, with all the pressure and the criticism that comes along with it. Moreover it requires close to 10 months of travel, which is a significant challenge for someone with a young family.
