Frankfurt get a big win over Marseille to leave Group D wide open

(Football news) Eintracht Frankfurt showed their muscle as they beat Marseille 2-1 to leave the Champions League Group D wide open and maintain their chances of advancing on the final matchday next week. The win lifted the Europa League champions to seven points which is one point ahead of Marseille and are level with Sporting. Tottenham are top of the Group with 8 points eight after drawing 1-1 against Sporting.

Frankfurt now travel to Sporting next Tuesday as Marseille host Tottenham. The top two teams qualify for the last 16 which will be interesting as all the teams in the group are in contention to make the knockout stages. In a fiery start, Daichi Kamada completed a superb move to put the hosts in front after just three minutes with their first goal at home in the competition this season. They should have added one more goal in a strong first half but Mario Gotze who was making his 50th start in the competition and he headed wide a little later.

Marseille showed grit and determination as they drew level with a beautiful Matteo Guendouzi volley in the 22nd minute but their joy lasted only five minutes. The French international turned from hero to villain as he lost possession and Gotze, whose performances this season have made him a valid candidate for Germany's World Cup squad, played a one-two with Muani who easily slotted in the winner. Frankfurt keeper Kevin Trapp kept well to protect their one-goal lead at halftime when he got his hands to a brilliant strike from Amine Harit and tipped the ball wide. In the second half, Marseille had the upper hand in ball possession but struggled to create any clear cut chances, with Eintracht working very hard off the ball.

"Now we have a final in Lisbon. If we present ourselves like we did today and stand together then everything is still possible for us," said Randal Kolo Muani, who scored Frankfurt's winner.

"I don't know why things didn't work out this evening," said Marseille defender Jonathan Clauss. "We reacted well after a bad start but then conceded another goal due to a lapse in concentration. We tried to push, play as we are able to, but it wasn't enough. Now we have a final against [visitors] Spurs next week."
