(Football news) Robert Lewandowski's Bayern Munich future is under the scanner for quite some time. The player and the club have gone back and forth a few times with statements about their plans. The current stance is that Robert Lewandowski, who will be a free agent when his contract runs out in the summer of 2023, isn't going to sign a new one. Bayern Munich have made it pretty clear publically that Lewandowski has rejected extension offers but he will fulfill his current contract. Lewandowski wants a move away from Bavaria in search of a new challenge and Barcelona is his preferred destination but things could change in the next few days because of Real Madrid.
Barcelona have reportedly reached an agreement with the player but no negotiations have started with Bayern Munich. Despite the German club’s resistance, there is a transfer fee at which they will let go of the striker and the deal will depend on what that price is. If any club offers a good amount then Bayern will surely have to let him go instead of losing him for free. Lewandowski has achieved almost everything with Bayern Munich and it is quite natural that he wants to go and play in a different league. Waiting till 2023 will take another year out the prime of his playing career. Lewandowski in a statement said that "I've received no contract offer from FC Bayern and decided to leave. We need to find the best solution for me and for the club".
The Bavarian club has been very clear that Lewandowski will see out his contract. His agent has stated that he talked to the Bayern board about a new contract but failed to get a response which is what triggered Lewandowski's desire to leave. Since then, his former agent in a tweet said “Your whole life you want to go to Real Madrid, only to maybe end up in Barcelona later? Ok.” Lewandowski was never heavily linked with Real Madrid but a couple of years later there were some things disclosed in the media. The Polish striker always wanted to play for Real Madrid and had even started negotiations before changing his mind. The reason behind that is said to be Karim Benzema who Real Madrid have always considered untouchable. Benzema's dominance as the striker is the reason Lewandowski has avoided a move to Real Madrid.
Lewandowski rejected advances from PSG and Chelsea to prioritise Barcelona but things could quickly change if Real Madrid came calling. After Real Madrid missed out on Kylian Mbappe, they have been linked with a bunch of forwards. The Benzema factor is still pretty relevant but Carlo Ancelotti could find a way to play them both. The good relationship between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich because of past transfers of James Rodriguez, Xabi Alonso, Toni Kroos and Arjen Robben will definitely play a factor if Real Madrid do choose to go for him. Signing a 33-year-old striker isn't exactly Real Madrid's style but they could make an exception for a player of Lewandowski's calibre.
