(Football news) Having defeated Aston Villa 1-0 in the Women’s Super League, Chelsea Women visited Stade de Geneve to face Servette in their third Women’s Champions League Group A match. Emma Hayes, in the build up to the fixture had reiterated that her side needed to be “more relentless after the first goal” and last year’s runners up did exactly that, scoring seven past Servette, six of which came in the first half.
Melanie Leupolz opened the scoring for Chelsea in the eighth minute with a fantastic left footed strike into the far corner. The Blues were unfortunate not to have scored much earlier as Fran Kirby hit the post in the 2nd minute after her effort was denied by Servette’s goalkeeper Ines Pereira. However, the 28 year old did find the back of the net in the 16th minute after receiving a wonderful flick by Samantha Kerr. Two minutes later, the Australian scored a goal into an almost empty net when Leupolz’s cut back handed the goal on a platter for Kerr who duly converted.
Chelsea looked like a well oiled machine throughout as Fran Kirby’s lofted ball found Samantha Kerr’s feet again in the 20th minute whose left foot shot hit the back of the net. Kerr could have had a hat-trick in the 20th minute but skied her effort over the bar as the Blues looked at their ruthless best against a disgruntled Servette side who gave Chelsea far too much room to attack. Things went from bad to worse for the hosts who conceded a fifth goal in the 26th minute as Fran Kirby dinked the ball into the goal.
Chelsea continued knocking on Servette’s door but failed to score a sixth until seven minutes from the end of the first half when Jessie Fleming’s precise shot from a tight angle went past Pereira. Five minutes after the start of the second half, Chelsea scored their seventh goal, displaying fantastic combination play with Guro Reiten finding herself on the scoresheet. It could have easily been a cricket score and the Blues almost scored an eighth when Drew Spence hit the bar in the 64th minute. Chelsea Women are now on seven points after three games in Group A with Wolfsburg two points behind, having drawn 2-2 against Juventus. The Blues will next face Manchester City in the WSL on Saturday before hosting Servette next week.
