Will Reece James even consider leaving Chelsea for Real Madrid?

(Football news) All the rumours indicate that Real Madrid will make a few big transfers this summer. Antonio Rudiger and Kylian Mbappe are reportedly set to join Los Blancos for free. The Merengues are also interested in AS Monaco starlet Aurélien Tchouaméni whose transfer will be a little complicated. New reports have emerged from Spain revealing Real Madrid's interest in Reece James. The operation will be carried out at the end of the 2022/23 season and a lot will depend on the new ownership scenario.

Reece James has been Chelsea's first choice right back for around 2 years now. The Englishman is a product of Chelsea's academy who broke into the first team after an impressive loan spell at Wigan Athletic. While on loan, James became Wigan's Player of the Month in the 2018/19 season. Since his return to Chelsea the right back has performed at the highest level consistently. Watching his performance at the Bernabéu against Real Madrid may have convinced the Real Madrid board of his quality. When Real Madrid put all their efforts into signing a certain player, they very rarely fail but this time around the situation is different.

Players like Steven Gerrard, Alessandro del Piero and Francisco Totti have famously rejected Real Madrid for the love of their respective clubs. Reece James could be a similar story as he is a boyhood Chelsea fan who came through the ranks. If James does stay at Chelsea for the rest of his career then he will eventually end up being the captain of the club. Chelsea just cannot afford to lose Reece James at this point. He ticks way too many boxes in the squad for any amount of transfer fee to be sufficient. An English player who came through the ranks and is already considered one of the best in the world at his position at the age of 22 isn't something Chelsea's academy would produce that often.

English players at Real Madrid don't often reach their full potential and the language barrier is often the reason for it. Transfers of Thibaut Courtois, Mateo Kovacic and Eden Hazard have established a good relationship between the two clubs which should make things a little more smooth but that is only if Chelsea want to negotiate. From Reece James’ point of view it might be too early for him to switch to Real Madrid but at the same time it can also be a once in a lifetime opportunity of creating a legacy that not many players from England manage to do.
