(Football news) Real Madrid have finished the first half of the season and they sit 2nd in La Liga 2 points behind FC Barcelona and they are also in the UCL Round of 16 after topping their group. The majority of Real Madrid players have gone to their respective national teams for the World Cup in Qatar. One player who isn't going to Qatar is Ferland Mendy. Didier Deschamps in his squad included Real Madrid trio Aurélien Tchouaméni, Eduardo Camavinga and Karim Benzema but left out Mendy in favor of Theo Hernandez and Lucas Hernandez. Now there are reports in Spain that Real Madrid are not sure what to do with Ferland Mendy. His current contract runs out in 2025 which means that Real Madrid could probably get a good fee if they decided to sell him. One person that stands in the way is Carlo Ancelotti who considers Mendy an important part of the team.
It would be understandable if Real Madrid wanted to get rid of Mendy because he is the weakest link of the team. In the two and a half years Mendy has been at the club, he has established himself as the first choice right back. Defensively he is fantastic but his attacking ability has always been criticized and rightly so. In 122 appearances for Real Madrid, Mendy has only 5 goals and 10 assists. So many times it feels as though Real Madrid lack quality down the left despite having Vinicius Jr as a left winger. Real Madrid have been linked with Fran Garcia who came through their academy. Los Blancos reportedly have a buy-back clause for him. Real Madrid also hold 50% of Miguel Gutierrez rights after they sold him to Getafe in the summer. Both Garcia and Gutierrez are better going forward than Mendy.
If a player who is a regular starter for Real Madrid doesn't get an international call-up for footballing reasons then his quality has to be questioned. It is not even the case of the Deschamps having his preference or being biased, Theo and Lucas Hernandez are simply better than him. Real Madrid are likely to take a call in the summer and a lot will depend on Ancelotti. It wouldn't be a bad idea for Madrid to cash out on Mendy if he attracts some interest from other clubs. However they could also give him some more time in order to improve his attacking game. He is in his physical prime at the age of 27 years but his game can still go into next year in the next few years.
