(Football news) Manchester United have been offered a chance to sign Barcelona's out of favour right back Sergino Dest. The American still has 3 years left on his contract upto €20 million. Dest isn't a part of Barcelona manager Xavi's long-term plans and has reportedly been told to look for another club. Manchester United is a club which could be interested in his services as a massive overhaul is expected under new manager Erik Ten Hag. 

Sergino Dest was signed by Barcelona from Ajax for €21 million plus add ons in 2020. The full back had a decent start to his spell with the Catalan club. Dest played the full 90 minutes against Real Madrid just a month after signing. Despite Barcelona losing 3-1, Dest's performance was highly praised as he managed to keep Vinicius Jr quiet and also posed an attacking threat. The second season is when things soon started to go downhill for him. Dest started to miss a lot of games due to persistent injuries and Barcelona had to sign 38-year-old Dani Alves. Even when fully fit this season, Dest has had a lot of underwhelming games where his performance has been criticised. It would be safe to say that if Dest does leave Barcelona in the summer then his spell with the Blaugrana will be a failure of sorts.

Manchester United need to make a lot of improvement under Erik Ten Hag next season. Without context signing a player who struggled at Barcelona isn't necessarily the right move but things are a little broader than that. Dest has played under Erik Ten Hag at Ajax and he had a good period there which is what caused Barcelona to buy him. Dest has already shown in big games with Barcelona that he is capable of playing at the highest level. Both Manchester United's current right backs Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have been heavily criticised for their performances this season. It is very likely that Dest will be an improvement. Manchester United open to let go of Wan-Bissaka in which case Dalot and Dest could compete for the spot. 

Sergino Dest is 21 years of age and still has a lot of room for improvement. For a player of his age and ability he is likely to not cost much due to the financial condition of Barcelona. His signing could definitely be a hit and miss but it is worth the risk. Dest's flexibility is also a big asset as he has played at left back for Barcelona and has occasionally been deployed at right wing. Ten Hag will play a massive role in the negotiations but no Champions League football would be a very big obstacle for the Red Devils.
