(Football news) In a shocking turn of events Robert Lewandowski's Bayern Munich future is under the scanner. The player and the club have gone back and forth a few times with statements about the plans. The current stance is that Robert Lewandowski, whose contract runs out in the summer of 2023 isn't going to sign a new one. Bayern Munich have made it pretty clear publically that Lewandowski has rejected extension offers but he will fulfill his current contract. Lewandowski wants a move away from Bavaria in search of a new challenge and Barcelona is his preferred destination.
Barcelona are negotiating with the player's agent but no negotiations have started with Bayern Munich. Despite Bayern Munich's resistance, there is some price at which they will let go of the Polish striker and the deal will depend on what that price is. If Barcelona offers a good amount then Bayern will surely have to let him go instead of losing him for free. Lewandowski has achieved almost everything he has to achieve with Bayern Munich and it is quite understandable that he wants to go and play in a different league. Waiting till 2023 will take another year out the prime of his playing career. Lewandowski in a statement said that "I've received no contract offer from FC Bayern and decided to leave. We need to find the best solution for me and for the club".
Barcelona president Joan Laporta said that the deal isn't easy to complete because of their financial situation. Barcelona in the past year have signed some quality forwards namely Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Memphis Depay and Ferran Torres. Now the potential addition of Lewandowski would give them a lot of depth in that area. Financially it will cost them a lot of money just in terms of wages itself. At the age of 33, Lewandowski is bound to slow down at some point which is a massive concern for Barcelona. The biggest question mark is whether he will be able to cope with the La Liga having only played in the Bundesliga and the Polish league.
Lewandowski will without question be a good signing for Barcelona but at this moment in time Bayern look very adamant to let him see out his contract. A lot of things could change in the additional year that the striker plays in Germany. Barcelona will have to sign another target meaning they may not need Lewandowski next year. The player himself could also lose interest in the move. Despite interest from Chelsea and PSG, the striker seems to be interested only in Barcelona which is good news for the Catalan club as financially they wouldn't be able to match the other two clubs. The next two weeks will be very crucial in the deal and Barcelona's opening bid could be enough to decide how the negotiations will flow.
