Real Madrid to start the season with UEFA Super Cup tie vs Frankfurt

(Football news) La Liga and UCL holders Real Madrid will begin their 2022/23 campaign with the UEFA Super Cup clash against Eintracht Frankfurt at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium. Real Madrid had an incredible run in the UCL last season which ended with them winning the coveted trophy for the 14th time in history. Frankfurt also did exceedingly well to win their first European trophy since 1980. Both the teams will be looking to start their season with a trophy which will set the tone for the rest of the season. Real Madrid did lose to city rivals Atletico Madrid in their last Super Cup and they will be keen to not repeat that.

Real Madrid squad:
Thibaut Courtois, Andriy Lunin, Luis López, Dani Carvajal, Eder Militão, David Alaba, Jesus Vallejo, Nacho, Antonio Rüdiger, Ferland Mendy, Alvaro Odriozola, Toni Kroos, Luka Modrić, Casemiro, Fede Valverde, Lucas Vazquez, Aurélien Tchouameni, Dani Ceballos, Eduardo Camavinga, Eden Hazard, Karim Benzema, Marco Asensio, Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo, Mariano.

Carlo Ancelotti has named a full strength team with zero injuries in the squad. The Italian did say that the line-up to play the game will be the same one that started in the final last season which means that Rudiger, Tchouaméni, Camavinga, and Rodrygo will all be on the bench. Real Madrid had a decent pre-season tour where they played three very high intensity games. Perhaps the only first team player who isn't prepared for the game is Dani Carvajal as he played only 63 minutes of pre-season as he suffered an injury. The likelihood is that he will still start the game because he has been fit for around 2 weeks now.

As for Eintracht Frankfurt, Filip Kostic will not be taking part in the match as he is one step away from joining Juventus on a permanent deal. Kostic's absence is a big blow for Frankfurt as he was one of the stars of last season's success. Frankfurt will have to be direct in their game and they will have to put their chances away. One thing that they can't afford to do is step off the gas at any point of the game. Real Madrid have shown time and time again that they can turn things around in the blink of an eye. Real Madrid have to be clinical in front of goal which is where Ballon D'or favourite Karim Benzema comes into play. The Frenchman will be looking to win his first trophy as official club captain.
