Premier League: Liverpool thrash Arsenal while City and Chelsea gain three points but Man Utd’s poor form continues

(Football news) It was a fiery clash at Anfield between Liverpool and Arsenal in a fixture where both the managers, Jurgen Klopp and Mikel Arteta almost came to blows after a heated altercation on the sidelines. It was exactly what the match needed as that feisty moment sparked a reaction from the home side who took the lead through Sadio Mane in the 39th minute from an Alexander-Arnold’s freekick. When the second half of the game started, Anfield continued to have an electric atmosphere as Liverpool doubled their scoring in the 52nd minute when Nuno Tavares’ back pass found Diego Jota’s feet and he went past Ben White and Aaron Ramsdale to slot the ball into an empty net.

Aubameyang was unfortunate to not score as Allison saved the shot with his feet and the Gunners soon regretted not taking the opportunity as Liverpool scored their third of the night in a brilliant build up that started from Allison as Jota’s brilliant header found Mane who sprinted into the box and squared the ball to Salah. To make matters worse, Liverpool scored their fourth goal in the 77th minute as Alexander-Arnold passed the ball to Minamino who scored with his first touch. With this result, Liverpool are currently in third place with 25 points, 4 points behind league leaders Chelsea while Arsenal are in fifth place with 20 points.

At the King Power Stadium, Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea secured all three points against Leicester City with an emphatic 3-0 victory. The Blues opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Ben Chilwell’s corner found the head of Antonio Rudiger. Chelsea looked dominant throughout the clash and doubled their lead in the 28th minute when former Leicester midfielder N'Golo Kante made a purposeful run towards the goal and unleashed a powerful left footed strike. Any hopes of a comeback for the hosts was extinguished in the 71st minute as Hakim Ziyech’s fancy footwork and pass found Christian Pulisic who found the back of the net from close range. The visitors will be happy with their performance against a formidable Leicester City side despite losing Jorginho due to injury and remain on the top of the league table with 29 points.

Having lost 2-0 to neighbours Manchester City at Old Trafford before the international break, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United travelled to Vicarage Road to face Watford, hoping to secure much needed three points and get back to winning ways. However, the Red Devils put on an utterly woeful performance that saw the hosts score four times against the 20 times champions of England as Man Utd lost their fourth game in five matches, a result that cost Solskjaer his job in what was the heaviest defeat to a newly-promoted opposition in more than 30 years for the club. Watford opened the scoring through Josh King in the 28th minute with Emmanuel Dennis providing the assist and Sarr doubled the advantage one minute before half-time with a powerful finish, redeeming himself for missing the penalty twice earlier.

Donny Van De Beek scored Manchester United’s only goal of the evening, five minutes after the second half began when Jadon Sancho’s cross found Cristiano Ronaldo’s head who passed it to the Dutch player who scored from virtually an empty net. However, any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Harry Maguire received a second yellow card after a late challenge on Tom Cleverley as Man United were reduced to 10 men. To add insult to injury, Watford scored two more goals in injury time as Joao Pedro and Emmanuel Dennis found the back of the net, resulting in Man United now finding themselves 12 points behind leaders Chelsea in as many games.

At the Etihad Stadium, reigning champions of England Manchester City convincingly defeated Everton 3-0 to ensure they kept pace with league leaders Chelsea. Pep Guardiola’s team found the breakthrough in the 44th minute when Joao Cancelo's stunning assist from the outside of his boot found Raheem Sterling who found the back of the net, his first league goal since August. 10 minutes after the second half began, Rodri doubled City’s advantage with a powerful shot in the top corner and Bernardo Silva truly finished the fixture with the home side’s third goal in the 86th minute. Manchester City are now three points behind league leaders Chelsea and will now face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League before welcoming West Ham next weekend.
