Premier League clubs spend record £1.5bn in the transfer window so far

(Football news) The Premier League has broken its own record for spending in the summer transfer window with a week still to go for it to finally close. According to Deloitte, clubs have spent £1.5bn so far, exceeding the £1.4bn that was spent in 2017 and it’s expected that this figure will go up much higher as the transfer deadline day is fast approaching. At the same point last season, Premier League clubs had spent £895m and the figure rose up to £1.1bn at the conclusion of the transfer window.

Chris Wood, assistant director in Deloitte's Sports Business Group said “The record levels of spending that we've seen in this summer transfer window so far provides a sign that the business models of Premier League clubs are rebounding post-Covid. While this is encouraging, the importance of clubs establishing responsible and sustainable spending policies cannot be overstated."

Some of the biggest transfers in the Premier League so far have been Darwin Nunez to Liverpool from Benfica for a fee of £64m that could rise to £85m. Manchester United recently bought Casemiro from Real Madrid for a fee of £60 million which is expected to rise to £70m while Tottenham Hotspur have signed Richarlison from Everton for £60m. Manchester City have purchased Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for £51.2m which is widely considered to be the deal of the summer and a bargain considering the player’s quality and the price.

Former City striker Raheem Sterling joined Chelsea for £50m and the Blues also bought Marc Cucurella from Brighton for more than £60m. Overall, Premier League clubs have spent more than £30m on fourteen players so far while the figure was only eight in the 2021 summer transfer window.
