England manager Sarina Wiegman wins UEFA Women’s Coach of the Year

(Football news) Following England’s historic success at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022, manager Sarina Wiegman has been awarded Women’s UEFA Coach of the Year 2021-22. She beat Lyon manager Sonia Bompastor who helped her team win their eighth Champions League title as well as Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg who led her team to the Euro 2022 final.

Wiegman guided England to a historic Euro 2022 victory, the country’s first since they won the World Cup in 1968. Her team was unbeaten on home soil, defeating Norway 8-0 in the Group Stages, winning 4-0 against Sweden in the semi finals before overcoming Germany 2-1 in extra time at the Wembley Stadium in the final. It was Wiegman’s second European Championships trophy, winning her first with her home country the Netherlands in 2017 and the 52 year old remains unbeaten with the Lionesses across 20 games since she took over last year.

Speaking after receiving the award, Wiegman said “This award is for everyone involved in the England team, the FA, the staff and of course all the players. Things have been set in place since I started with the team in September, things have gone really well, I've really enjoyed it and we've performed at our highest level. Our fans have been great too, and thank you to them for supporting us so much. Now we're looking forward again, hopefully we'll qualify for the World Cup next year, then go there and hope to improve our game and enjoy ourselves."

In other results Carlo Ancelotti was crowned UEFA Men’s Coach of the Year after guiding his team to the La Liga and UEFA Champions League titles while Karim Benzema was named Player of the Year after having an excellent campaign with Real Madrid. Current Ballon D'Or holder Alexia Putellas was crowned UEFA Women's Player of the Year after scoring 12 goals in 14 Primera Division games in the 2021/22 season with Barcelona Femeni.
