Odisha FC defeat NorthEast United to keep play-off hopes alive in the ISL

(Football news) Odisha FC progressed from ninth to fifth place in the Indian Super League table after a 2-0 victory over NorthEast United at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda on Tuesday. The result means they are only a point behind reigning champions Mumbai City FC who currently occupy the fourth spot while NorthEast United’s winless run extends to five games and Khalid Jamil’s team are currently 10th on the table. The Kalinga Warriors got an early lead through Daniel Lalhlimpuia in the 17th minute while Aridai Suarez extended the advantage five minutes later and was involved in both the goals.

Both sides created half-chances after kick off as NorthEast United’s Suhair Vadakkepeedika provided Lalkhawpuimawia a decent opportunity which the latter could not capitalize on after miscuing his shot from 12 yards away. NorthEast United’s inability to make use of their chances cost them dearly as Odisha FC scored through Daniel Lalhlimpuia in the 17th minute from a simple tap-in. He was provided an assist from Aridai Suarez who went past Provat Lakra and provided a precise low cross that became an assist.

Arindai scored a goal just five minutes after creating the first as he found space on the left flank, cut inside on his right foot and unleashed a shot which went past Mirshad Michu and into the back of the net in the 22nd minute. The second half saw the Highlanders push for a goal and get back into the game as Hernan Santana’s volley hit the crossbar from long range. Odisha FC’s Nandhakumar Sekar came on as a substitute and had a great one-on-one opportunity to score his team’s third goal but his shot was saved.

NorthEast United did find the back of the net through Laldanmawia Ralte in the late stages of the match but his goal was ruled out for off-side. Despite four minutes for stoppages being added in the second half, Odisha FC not only secured the three points but also a clean sheet in a morale boosting win. NorthEast United will next face Chennaiyin FC at the PJN Stadium on Saturday, 22nd January while Odisha FC will take on Hyderabad FC at the Tilak Maidan on Thursday, 27th January.
