(Football news) The Premier League has a notorious reputation for hiring and firing managers, after last week's sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo from Tottenham Hotspur, two more casualties were announced this week with Daniel Farke being relieved for his responsibilities at Norwich City while Aston Villa sacked Dean Smith after their defeat against Southampton on Friday.
Norwich City were without a league win since the last 10 games and Daniel Farke was sacked just hours after the Canaries won their first league game 2-1 against Brentford. The side are currently rock bottom in the Premier League (20th) and are five points away from safety after 11 games. In addition to Daniel Farke, the backroom staff comprising Eddie Riemer, Chris Domogalla and Christopher John have also departed from the club.
In a statement on the club’s website, sporting director Stuart Webber said “In continuing to demand the very best for our football club, this decision was not an easy one. I know how determined Daniel and his staff were to succeed at this level, but we feel that now is the right time for a change to give ourselves the best opportunity of retaining our Premier League status. All at Norwich City should be forever grateful to Daniel and his staff for the significant role they have played in our journey. They helped deliver two Championship titles, many memorable moments and they all fully brought into our philosophy and what it means to be part of this football club."
Farke was appointed at Norwich City in 2017 and helped the Canaries earn promotion to the Premier League twice but failed to retain their status in England’s top flight. Before his sacking, Farke said “We are finally there. It's been a long wait and after a tough start it's great to get the first win under our belts. It's great for the mood, the confidence and the self-belief. The lads deserve to have this winning feeling back in the dressing room. There's no replacement for wins for self-belief and, let's be honest, they're all young lads. I think it's the youngest Premier League XI so it's not easy for them. Everyone is criticising them so they deserve this. We've got a great team spirit.
"Last season we were winning game after game but the fans weren't able to celebrate with us, so also for them it's a great celebration. They've had to be very patient. Everyone was so committed today to bring home the three points. Every game at this level is about fine margins but the key to today was going back to our DNA, keeping the ball and making short passes. We had to defend in the second half but we still had the chance of scoring a third in the second half."
Meanwhile, Aston Villa parted ways with Dean Smith after the London based side endured a poor run of five successive defeats. Smith was appointed in 2018 and earned Villa a promotion in the Premier League, the 50 year old English manager spent about £100m on the likes of Emi Buendia, Danny Ings and Leon Bailey but it appears that the side have failed to move on from the departure of Jack Grealish to Manchester City. Smith leaves Villa having won 28 of his 87 Premier League games in charge (32.2%) with an overall win rate of 39.6% from 139 games.
Chief executive Christian Purslow said “This year we have not seen the continuous improvement in results, performances and league position which we have all been looking for, For this reason we have decided to make a change now to allow time for a new head coach to make an impact. The board would like to sincerely thank Dean for his many excellent achievements, on and off the pitch, during this time," added Purslow. “Everyone knows how much Aston Villa means to Dean and his family. He has represented the club with distinction and dignity – universally liked and respected by everybody associated with Aston Villa."
