Newcastle one step closer to safety with win over Wolves

(Football news) Newcastle United continued their resurgence after the January transfer window by moving 10 points clear of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at St. James’ Park on Friday. The visitors were sub-par throughout the match while Eddie Howe’s team put up an impressive performance and managed to get the breakthrough when Chris Wood converted from the penalty spot in the 72nd minute.

An onrushing Jose Sa fouled Chris Wood who went on to score his first goal for the Magpies since his £25m move from Burnley in January. The striker came close to scoring in the first half as well, converting from close range after disastrous defending from Willy Boly and Jonny Otto but the goal was disallowed by the VAR as Bruno Guimaraes was offside during the build up.

Despite an overwhelmingly positive performance, Newcastle will be disappointed that Ryan Fraser was forced off due to injury after 12th minutes due to a muscle injury with Miguel Almiron replacing him. The result also means that the Magpies ended their three game losing streak and are now likely to survive in the Premier League this season. Wolves’ performance was so abysmal that they couldn’t manage a single shot on target until the 81st minute and only managed two shots throughout the match. The result meant that they remained eighth, two points behind Manchester United and West Ham.

Speaking after the match, Eddie Howe said “Massive tonight. It was the kind of game we expected it to be. Wolves make it difficult for you. We had our moments. It took a penalty to win the game but the players gave everything again. I am so pleased for Chris Wood. You could see him filling in on the left of midfield. He is a willing lad. The goal will do wonders for him. I am pleased he stepped up and took it. We still have work to do but that was a massive step forward tonight. It brings us closer to safety. I hope there will be a different Newcastle in the future but we have to play a certain way to get results at the moment."

Newcastle striker Chris Wood said “It is fantastic. There is something about playing in front of St James' Park and we want to get them up for it. Luckily today we did. It helps when you play those teams you do well against. It is always good to score as a striker but ultimately we need points to get out of the relegation battle and to build next season. It is getting closer. We want this club to go to the next level. We need to get to 40 points and then build."
