(Football news) Lionel Messi surpassed Pele to become the second-highest scoring player in professional football with 758 goals for club and country. Cristiano Ronaldo is ahead in the list with 801 goals in professional football. The legendary Pele has been the most prolific scorer in South America for quite some time, sitting on 757 career goals for club and country, but the 7-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi has now surpassed him. Messi, playing for Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League Group stage scored a brace as his team won 4-1 against Club Brugge.
Messi scored his 5th goal in the Champions League season as it was 125 goals in the competitions, the Argentine has 678 club goals to his name while a total of 80 have come for the national team. Most of Messi's club goals have come for Barcelona while only 6 have been scored in the PSG shirt. The 34 year old has also surpassed Pele in the list of most international goals by a South American player this year. Messi also went on to lift the Copa America this year which helped him win his 7th Ballon d’or and even at 34 years of age, Messi continues to break and add more accolades to his bag.
On the other hand his teammate Kylian Mbappe reached another milestone in career by becoming the youngest player to reach 30 Champions League goals, breaking the previous record held by PSG team-mate Lionel Messi. He reached 30 Champions League goals at the age of 22 years and 352 days while Messi was 23 years, 131 days old when he reached that milestone back in 2010. Mbappe this season already has 11 goals and 14 assists in 22 appearances in all competitions for PSG.
Mbappe after the match said “We took this match seriously and we delivered a complete performance, we can still improve. The bottom line is that we need to manage our weak times better. We have weak times, which are maybe much too weak.''
Messi scored his first goal of the game in the 38 minutes with a curling effort from the edge of the box as he doubled his personal tally when Messi got a fourth for PSG from the penalty spot 14 minutes from time. Although PSG won, they still finished second in the group behind Manchester City who subsequently lost their final match to RB Leipzig. Messi at the age of 34 is just getting better and scoring goals for fun as he has his eyes set on the magical 800 goals that only Cristiano Ronaldo has achieved.
