(Football news) Manchester United’s Amad Diallo is set to sign for Scottish club Rangers on loan until the end of the season. The 19 year old was signed by the Red Devils for £37.2m from Atalanta but has only made nine appearances for the club, scoring one goal. Diallo was born in Ivory Coast but moved to Italy at the age of 10 and joined Atalanta at age 15. He made his debut for the club in 2019, becoming the youngest player to score on his Serie A debut at the age of 17 years and 109 days old.
Diallo’s move to Rangers is a positive one for his development as the 19 year old has not received enough opportunities at Manchester United. The Red Devils have Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho as options on the wing and with Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani as attacking options, it would have been unlikely for Diallo to get an opportunity even in the Carabao Cup. Moreover, with Ianis Hagi injured for Rangers, Diallo’s loan spell could prove to be fruitful with plenty of gametime.
In an interview after being unveiled as a Rangers player, Diallo said “I am delighted to join Rangers until the end of the season. It is fantastic for me at this stage of my career to have the opportunity to come to such a big club that is challenging on a number of fronts and will give me some excellent opportunities to test myself in many environments." Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst said “I am really pleased to add Amad to our squad for the rest of the season. He is a player who I have been aware of for some time, and when the opportunity to sign him came up, we were very keen to make it happen. He will add a lot to our squad and provide even more competition for the players in the forward areas."
Despite having limited experience, Diallo is one of the hottest prospects in world football. The fact that Manchester United paid £37.2m should be evidence of the Ivorian’s potential. The 19 year old can play on either wing for Rangers or in the number 10 role and brings both versatility and energy to Rangers. He’s a left-footed player who likes to cut inside, has good dribbling and an eye for making the right pass as well as a low centre of gravity. He might be a diamond in the rough, but Diallo certainly has the ability to propel Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side to their second Scottish Premiership title.
