(Football news) Luis Suarez has said that he has reached a “preliminary agreement” to rejoin his first club Nacional in Uruguay. The 35 year old departed from Atletico Madrid this summer as a free agent and the player is expected to remain with Nacional at least until the conclusion of the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Suarez released a video on social media which said that he hopes for details to be finalised and "we hope to reach the agreement we all desire". The Nacional supporters have been very excited since reports emerged about Suarez’s return to the club with approximately 20,000 fans wearing his masks at Nacional’s recent game.
Suarez made his professional debut with Nacional at the age of 18 in 2005, helping them win the Uruguayan league title and earned a move to Europe with Groningen the next season. He said on Twitter “First of all I would like to say thank you for the great affection shown to me and my family these last few days, which has been impressive. That touched our hearts at this moment that we had to make a decision. And it was impossible to waste this opportunity of playing again in Nacional and we have a pre-agreement with the club. In the next few hours, details will be finalised and we hope that the agreement we all want will be reached and that we can all enjoy this new stage and see each other in the coming days."
Suarez is Uruguay’s all-time leading goalscorer with 68 goals in 132 games since 2007. He has played for Groningen, Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in his career and looks set to rejoin the club where his career began. The player had also been linked with a move to the MLS and Suarez himself admitted that he had multiple offers to play in the USA. However, with the Qatar World Cup on the horizon, the 35 year old said that MLS clubs don’t make it to the play-offs until early October, which would mean that a move to the league would not be suitable for him.
