Giorgio Chiellini set for MLS switch after 18 years with Juventus

(Football news) Juventus on Wednesday lost 4-2 against Inter Milan at the end of extra time in the Coppa Italia final. The loss meant that Juventus will end the season without a single piece of silverware. After the game, captain Giorgio Chiellini confirmed that he will be leaving the club after 18 years. The Italian is likely to go to the MLS, bringing an end to his incredible career at Juventus.

Giorgio Chiellini joined Juventus at the age of 20 and has worked his way up to a legendary status at the club. He is a part of one of the best defence quartets in the world along with Leonardo Bonucci, Andrea Barzagli and Gianluigi Buffon. In his career at Juventus, Chiellini has seen everything from a relegation to Serie B to 9 consecutive Serie A wins. He has been with the club through thick and thin but both parties have now decided that it is time to move on. Individually the Italian has been a part of the Serie A team of the season 5 times and has won the Serie A defender of the year award 3 times. He was a part of the UEFA team of the year in 2017 and the France football World XI in 2015.

Chiellini is widely considered as one of the greatest defenders of his generation. He led the Italian side to a victory in the Euros last year, showing that even at the age of 36 he still had that quality. One of things he hasn't been able to achieve is the UEFA Champions League winners medal despite reaching the finals twice. Known for his aggressive defensive ability and courage; the Italian is possibly one of the last of his kind. Football doesn't produce defenders like Chiellini very often these days. It will be tough for Juventus to replace the great man but Merih Demiral, Matthijs de Ligt and Daniele Rugani will be fighting for his spot.
