Champions League: Tottenham narrowly defeat 10 man Eintracht Frankfurt

(Football news) Tottenham Hotspur secured a narrow 3-2 victory over 10 man Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Champions League with the result helping the London based team to go on top of Group D. A brace by Heung-Min Son and a goal from the spot by Harry Kane was enough to give Antonio Conte’s team a 3-1 lead at half-time. To make matters worse for the visitors, Tuta was sent off for two yellow cards in the space of three minutes for fouls on Son just 15 minutes into the second half. However, Frankfurt pulled a goal back in the 87th minute when substitute Faride Alidou headed in from a corner. Kane went on to miss a penalty in the 92nd minute to set up a nervy end to the match for the hosts.

Speaking after the match, Tottenham manager Antonio Conte said “When we missed the penalty honestly, I was a bit scared, because I thought everything can happen. We could have scored many, many goals. Instead, until the end we suffered. For sure, we have to try to learn about this situation and understand the game has not ended. But an important win for us. We started in a difficult way but with a good reaction, we scored three goals, we had many chances to improve – good saves from their goalkeeper – and in the end we're leading our group.

“And in the next game against Sporting Lisbon we have to try to get three points to go through to the next round. We used the first game [against Frankfurt] to improve and understand how to hurt them. We played a good game, we created many chances and we have to continue in this way. At the same time we have to understand, to learn about this game that until the end we have to stay focused. It would be a disaster if we drew a game like this."

Spurs can take positives in the fact that since last season, only Mohamed Salah (39) has scored more goals than Harry Kane (36) and Heung-Min Son (29) in all competitions. Kane, who had scored 21 successive penalties has now missed two out of his last four chances from the spot. Moreover, Tottenham have seen their opponents get 10 red cards across all competitions, more than any other team. Antonio Conte’s team now have a good opportunity to progress into the knockout stage if they defeat Sporting CP at home on October 26th but will face the likes of Everton, Manchester United and Newcastle United before.
