(Football news) Barcelona are in dire need of a revamp. The Catalan club are currently 5th on the La Liga table, they are out of the Copa del Rey and have been demoted to the Europa League. After signing Ferran Torres they are also eyeing Alvaro Morata in the winter transfer window.
Reports have suggested that they are looking to reinforce their defence next season which they desperately need. Chelsea duo Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen are said to be on the top of their list. The pair are both out of contract with Chelsea in the summer and will be available for free. While Chelsea are keen to renew Christiansen's contract, it is understood that this will be Azpilicueta's last season with them.
Azpilicueta can play right back, left and also in a three man defence. Xavi till now has only played a four at the back at Barcelona and Azpilicueta has never played in centre back in a four man defence. The Spaniard will be 33 in August which means he will be yet another experienced player which Barcelona already have a lot of like Gerard Pique, Dani Alves, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. Azpilicueta is still playing week in week out for Chelsea and could be a short term solution for Barcelona.
Christensen is more of a long term option as getting a 25 year old player who is about to enter his prime on a free transfer is a very good deal. The Danish defender could be exactly what Barcelona need in terms of new blood. Gerard Pique is already 34 years of age and is already looking way past his prime. Eric Garcia hasn't been able to make an impact while Ronald Araujo is injury prone and when fit doesn't have much competition. Niklas Sule is another out of contract centre back who the Blaugrana have eyes on. It will be at least a few years before Barcelona can hunt for the big boys. Till then they have to make the best out of free agents.
