(Football news) Mats Wieffer scored the only goal of the match in the second-half to hand Feyenoord Rotterdam a 1-0 home victory over AS Roma in the first leg of their Europa League quarter finals. Wieffer was on hand when he struck a bouncing half-volley from outside the box in the 53rd minute which was subsequently the only goal of the match as the current Eredivisie leaders took a narrow advantage in the return leg in the capital city next week.

The 23-year-old who recently turned a full international for Netherlands as he made amends for the penalty he conceded before halftime when he fouled Tammy Abraham in the box. Lorenzo Pellegrini stepped up to take the spot kick but he hit it against the post to waste a golden opportunity for a potentially vital goal in the tie at the Feyenoord Stadium. Wieffer’s goal was brilliantly set up by winger Oussama Idrissi, who easily dribbled his way into the box before laying a perfect ball back.

Orkun Kokcu and Lutsharel Geertruida both had very good chances to add to their advantage as Roma were denied an equaliser when Roger Ibanez’s header hit the underside of the bar but goal line technology deemed that the ball had completely not crossed the net.
