Football news) A record 83,000 fans were in attendance as England Women went on to secure a 4-2 victory on penalties against Brazil in the inaugural Women’s FInalissima after the two sides drew 1-1 in normal time. A goal by Ella Toone helped the Lionesses take the lead in the 23rd minute but Brazil’s Andressa Alves scored the equaliser in the 93rd minute when goalkeeper Mary Earps fumbled her save, resulting in the game going to spot kicks.

Brazil captain Rafaelle Souza and Tamires missed their penalties for the visitors while Ella Toone missed for England but Kelly managed to slot in the winning penalty to secure the trophy. The result meant that England are now 30 matches unbeaten under Sabrina Wiegman and have won their first penalty shootout to win the Finalissima, adding it to their Euro 2022 trophy and the Arnold Clark Cup trophies. Alessia Russo started as England’s number 9 and was supported by James and Hemp. Alex Greenwood partnered with Leah Williamson in defence as Millie Bright was injured.

Speaking after the match, England manager Sabrina Wiegman said “An incredible atmosphere again. That will never be normal for me. I think it was a great game, two different phases, the first half and second half. Great learning. Lots of learning from us in preparation for the World Cup. The learning thing is nice but we really wanted to win this one too. Brazil played two different formations. In the first half, we played very well. I think we should have scored a couple of more goals.

“Then Brazil switched to 4-4-2 because that’s what they’re used to. They pressed a lot higher and we had a lot of problems getting out of their press. That was a struggle, but it’s good for us.” On going 30 matches unbeaten: “I feel privileged. I’m very happy working here. Such an incredible group. The team is so committed, they want to learn every day. I’m happy. I think the first half was really good but we were challenged a lot in possession in the second half. I am happy, it is good that we have this information. We will take it from here, we have a game on Tuesday and then we will be ready.”
