(Football news) Due to a gesture he made after scoring against Slovakia in the round of 16, there had been serious doubts about the Real Madrid midfielder’s eligibility for the match against the last eight.

However, the former Birmingham City player then claimed that it was “an inside-joke gesture towards some close friends” after Bellingham kissed his right hand and then grabbed his crotch in the direction of the Slovakia bench.

Though there had been rumors that he would face a punishment for England’s quarterfinal match against Switzerland, the 21-year-old adamantly denied that he made the gesture towards the Slovakia bench.

However, UEFA has fined Bellingham €30,000 (£25,400) and imposed a suspended one-match suspension.

Bellingham will be available for England against Switzerland

UEFA said that he was guilty of “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.

Meanwhile, it was added that “said suspension is not immediately enforced and is subject to a probationary period of one year, starting from the date of the present decision.”

The decision is a huge boost for England, with Bellingham scoring twice for the national side at the competition, including a last-gasp leveller against Slovakia in the round of 16.

The Real Madrid midfielder entered the competition off the back of scoring 23 goals and registering 13 assists in 42 appearances at club level during the 2023-24 campaign.

England will be without the services of Marc Guehi on Saturday, though, with the Crystal Palace centre-back suspended due to the yellow card that he picked up against Slovakia.
