(Cricket News) The first Ashes Test has been a perfect example of contrasting styles clashing and so far both styles are proving to be effective. Australia have left their ego aside and have employed defensive field tactics to stop England from scoring quick runs. They had a deep point and deep square straight away to new batters to make sure they don’t get off to a flying start. England still managed to score quick runs at the rate of over 5 an over. Australia on the other hand played the classic way but it was still as effective because they fell just 7 runs short in the first innings.
Moeen Ali’s Test return has been an interesting one so far. The off-spinner has picked up 2 wickets but his economy is 4.25. Moeen’s batting at number 8 is a bonus because he is in the team for his spin bowling. On top of that, his finger was very sore towards the end of the Australian innings. He even bowled a few loose balls due to that but Moeen has to get over it because in the 2nd innings England need him more. Ben Stokes did bowl 7 overs and even got the wicket of Steve Smith but it is pretty clear that he is still not fully fit.
The game is hanging in the balance and day 4 is crucial for both teams. England’s decision to declare on 393/8 doesn’t look to be the correct one at this stage. It will be interesting to see if Ben Stokes will do something similar in order to force a result. Australia will be hoping to take advantage of the situation and bundle England over cheaply. Nathan Lyon is the key man as the pitch has started to produce some turn and uneven bounce. As for England, it is crucial that Joe Root bats till the end.
