Embolo scores to help Switzerland beat his birth country Cameroon

(Football news) Switzerland started their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win against Cameroon. The win is very important for the Swiss before their big game against Brazil who also won their first game against Serbia. It was a pretty evenly matched game between the teams as the possession was 51% in favor of Switzerland who had 3 shots on target while Cameroon had 5. Switzerland lined up in a 4-2-3-1 with Xherdan Shaqiri on the right wing. Cameroon played in a standard 4-3-3 with captain Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting up front.

Cameroon had two very good chances to break the deadlock but they couldn't take them. Towards the end of the half Manuel Akanji had a free header from a corner but he couldn't hit the target. 3 minutes into the 2nd half Shaqiri assisted Breel Embolo who gave Switzerland the lead. The Monaco striker didn't celebrate out of respect as Cameroon is his birthplace. Embolo was very young when his mother moved to France before finally settling in Switzerland. He played at U16, U20 and U21 levels with Switzerland and even though he had the option of playing for Cameroon, he pledged his allegiance to Switzerland. Embolo has already made 60 appearances for Switzerland scoring 12 goals.

Andre Onana made a couple of really good saves to keep Cameroon in the game but they couldn't create something significant enough at the other end. Now Cameroon will face Serbia next where they could go out of the tournament if they lose. Switzerland are now in a decent position before playing against Brazil. If they do get a result in that game, then their qualification looks very likely. That will be very difficult after seeing Brazil's performance against Serbia.
