(Cricket News) Elgar, at the age of 36, is reportedly contemplating retirement after relinquishing the Test captaincy to Temba Bavuma in February, as per information obtained from the Rapport newspaper. This consideration comes in the wake of the culmination of the two-Test series against India.

As detailed in the publication, Elgar is under the impression that he does not fit into the long-term plans of Test coach Shukri Conrad. Despite showcasing excellent form in domestic cricket, where he accumulated an impressive 402 runs in six innings for the Titans with an average of 80.40, Elgar appears uncertain about what lies ahead in his cricketing journey.

An undisclosed insider quoted by Rapport is anticipating the imminent announcement of Elgar’s retirement. The newspaper also reveals that Elgar was initially expected to lead a depleted South African team, lacking their SAT20 players, in a two-Test series against New Zealand in February. However, talks between Elgar and Cricket South Africa did not progress as smoothly as initially envisioned.

Rumors circulate that Conrad is considering Neil Brand, the captain of South Africa A, as the potential opening batsman for the New Zealand series. If Elgar opts for retirement after the India series, Tony de Zorzi is likely to become Brand’s opening partner.

Reflecting on his cricketing journey, Elgar shared his thoughts in a 2018 interview with The Indian Express, stating, “In my past, I haven’t been given a lot of credit for what I have done. I don’t think there is a big relationship between me and South African cricket fans. A lot of time, what I have done has been brushed under the carpet. People forget that you need cricketers like me in every team.”

He went on to say, “I have found a way of dealing with the reactions, and creating a vibe around myself. Because I don’t play in the IPL. IPL players get a lot more credit and so be it. They deserve it. So I am not a big person to really let go and enjoy people kissing my arse for doing something what I am supposed to do!”
