(Football news) Edinson Cavani is reportedly close to agreeing a deal with Spanish side Villarreal. Ever since Cavani left Manchester United it has always been reported that his preference is to stay in Europe and to try out La Liga. Boca Juniors were very keen on signing Cavani but the striker was always going to prefer to stay in Europe for as long as possible. The Uruguayan is 35 years old and has been constantly hampered with injuries for the past 2 seasons and therefore will not be the main man at Villarreal. He is more likely to be used for certain situations and isn't expected to start week in week out. 

After winning the Europa League in 2020/21, Villarreal finished 7th on the La Liga table and managed to reach the UEFA Champions League semi final. The Spanish club will be looking to up things this season especially in the league as they haven't finished in the top 4 since the 2015–16 season. Unai Emery has done wonders in Europe but they need to break into the top 4 to play in the Champions League. The Yellow Submarine have already extended Giovanni Lo Celso's loan deal. They have also signed Kiko, Jose Luis Morales and Pepe Reina to strengthen their squad. Unai Emery has also lost the services of 9 players including star left back Pervis Estupinan. .

Cavani will bring his vast experience into play at Villarreal. His fitness is definitely a big problem but for a free transfer of a player of his quality it is worth the risk. Apart from his deadly finishing ability, Cavani is also a work horse. Even though the striker has never played in the La Liga, he definitely has what it takes to succeed in the League. He will be competing with Morales, Gerard Moreno and Arnaut Danjuma for a place in the starting XI.
