(Football news) Borussia Dortmund continued their recent form with goals from Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Julian Brandt in the second half to hand them a 2-0 victory over hosts Werder Bremen on Saturday as they extended their winning run this year and stayed within three points off Bayern Munich. Bynoe-Gittens, who is the recent English prodigy in the Bundesliga broke the deadlock in the 67th minute after coming on as a substitute.

The Ruhr valley club will face Chelsea on Wednesday in the Champions League round of 16, and currently in third place on 40 points, three points behind leaders Bayern Munich and two points off second-placed Union Berlin. It was Dortmund’s 15th goal by a teenager this season, which is as many as all the other Bundesliga teams combined. Brandt then finished off the match with a fine performance as he scored a goal of his own in the 85th to hand Dortmund their fifth win from five league games this year.

“I am not only satisfied with the result but always with the way we played out this win,” said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic.

“It is not easy to leave Bremen with a win. The fact that again a substitute [Bynoe-Gittens] scored is proof of the balance of our squad.”

Surprise title contenders Union Berlin fought back with two goals in 11 minutes to get a 2-1 win over RB Leipzig on Saturday and stay on the heels of Bayern Munich as they stretched their winning run to five consecutive Bundesliga wins. Goals from Janik Haberer and Robin Knoche in the second half helped Union to 42 points which is subsequently one behind Bayern. Leipzig saw its first league defeat since September as they dropped to fifth on 36 points. Leipzig went in front thanks to Benjamin Henrichs’ thundering strike from 25-metre in the 24th minute.

Leipzig will face Manchester City in the Champions League round of 16 and had the better chances in the first half but Union in the second half levelled in the 61st minute with a brilliant volley from Haberer. Things got even worse as Union were awarded a penalty for a handball and Knoche calmly put away his spot kick to put the visitors in front. Substitute Yussuf Poulsen slid into the box in the 78th minute to flick the ball into the net but his effort was deemed to be offside. Union desperately hung on for the win despite immense pressure from Leipzig
