(Football news) Borussia Dortmund became the new leaders of the Bundesliga standings after demolishing visitors Cologne 6-1 on Saturday. Two goals from Sebastien Haller and captain Marco Reush helped the Ruhr valley club win. Dortmund last won the Bundesliga title under Jurgen Klopp in 2012. They underlined their title ambitions by blowing away their opponents in an explosive first half performance where Dortmund scored four goals.

Dortmund are subsequently on 53 points which is one ahead of Bayern Munich who suffered a surprising loss against Bayer Leverkusen. RB Leipzig moved to third place in Bundesliga standings with 45 points following their shock 1-0 loss to struggling VfL Bochum. In the first half it all started when Raphael Guerreiro opened the scoring for Dortmund’s in the 15th minute after superb work down the wing from Donyell Malen.

Returning Ivory Coast striker Haller, who is back to full fitness after undergoing cancer treatment earlier this season, doubled the advantage as he thundered in a shot at goal after a quick passing move two minutes later. With Cologne players playing catch-up it was only a matter of time before Dortmund scored again. This time club captain Marco Reus superbly rifled in a curling shot just after half an hour before Malen deservedly got on the scoresheet with a powerful shot that keeper Marvin Schwaebe could not parry away.

FC Koln briefly in the 42nd minute thought that they were back in the game when Davie Selke cut the deficit with his first goal for the club. Despite a slow start after the break Dortmund again reclaimed their four goal advantage when Haller tucked in his second goal of the match after a Mo Dahoud free kick which bounced off the bar. Reus scored his 150th Bundesliga goal and increased his total of 161 goals in all competitions for the club in the 70th minute. The Bundesliga is now set to resume on Friday, March 31, after a break for the  international matches.

“We played a really good game today, we started well and instantly took control. The lads enjoyed themselves out there,” Dortmund coach Edin Terzic told a news conference. “We took a step in the right direction today, especially in terms of efficiency. Everyone performed really well and did not ease off at any moment, from keeper to striker.”

“We are happy to go into the break for international matches with this result. We are overall satisfied with our game and our rhythm,” Terzic added.
