DFB Pokal: Bayern get thrashed by Monchengladbach as Dortmund and Leipzig progress through to the next round

(Football news) Bayern couldn’t transcend their league form in the cup competition, Monchengladbach played scintillating football to rout past Bayern 5-0. Dortmund breezed past Ingolstadt to cruise into the third round of the DFB Pokal cup.

Bayern suffered their heaviest ever cup defeat to Monchengladbach, this the second year in a row that they have been knocked out early in the competition. Without Nagelsmann at the touch line, Bayern opted for a strong starting XI but received a taste of their own medicine when they lost 5-0 to the host. In the first half Monchengladbach raced to a three goal lead with Kouadio Kone opening the scoring in the second minute, Ramy Bensebaini then added a second after some brilliant build up play from the Gladbach players in the 15th minute, he then went onto to add a third through a penalty in the 21st minute to almost seal the match. In the second half Bayern did not recover at all as Breel Embolo scored a brace inside the first 10 minutes of the half to complete a terrific performance from them. This was Bayern's heaviest defeat ever in the competition and heaviest loss since 1978 when they lost 7-1 to Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Max Eberl, sporting director of Gladbach said. “It was a magical Pokal evening that won’t soon be forgotten. I think it was also deserved. We defended very well and actively went forward. We wanted to impress Bayern with that, and we did. And we scored some very nice goals up front. In this game, we see what our team is capable of. We really impressed them. They were at a loss. We played Bayern up against the wall. I have the big goal of being in the final at some point, We have come one step closer to this goal. It’s great for the Bundesliga and the Pokal. Bayern can’t win the double”.

Dortmund won 2-0 against Bundesliga 2 side Ingolstadt to book their place in the round of 16. Marco Rose made five changes to keep the freshness of the team as they played a high intensity match on the weekend. Although Dortmund dominated the proceedings in the first half, they failed to take the lead as Jude Bellingham came closest after he rattled the post. The story of the second half remained the same, Marco Rose with 20 minutes remaining brought on Reus and Thorgan Hazard as it proved to be the tipping point, Hazard broke the deadlock when he applied a close finish from a Brandt cross and 10 minutes from time he again scored when he fired in a six yard volley to take them to the next round.

RB Leipzig continued their recent resurgence after they won 1-0 against Babelsberg, Jesse Marsch’s side were not at their best as a solitary goal from Dominc Szoboszlai was enough for them to progress to the next round. Another upset was created by second division Karlsruher who knocked out Bundesliga high flyers Bayer Leverkusen, they beat them 2-1 after goals from Cueto and South Korean forward Kyoung Rok Choi were enough for them to qualify to the round of 16.
