(Cricket News) Delhi’s 2023-24 Ranji Trophy campaign got off to a dismal start as Pondicherry handed them a nine-wicket defeat, marking only the second win for Pondicherry in the Ranji Trophy elite group.

On a brisk Day 4, Gourav Yadav and Abin Matthew quickly dismissed Delhi’s overnight batsmen, Harsh Tyagi and Ishant Sharma, as they bundled out for 145 runs in the second innings. With just 50 runs needed to win, Pondicherry effortlessly chased down the total in 13.1 overs with nine wickets in hand.

Delhi struggled to surpass 150 runs in both innings, with left-arm spinner Harsh Tyagi, batting at No. 8, being their standout performer, scoring 34 and 28 in the respective innings. The openers, Yash Dhull and Lakshya Thareja, faced challenges against the new ball in both innings, and the batting unit, including seasoned players like Vaibhav Rawal and Himmat Singh, faltered.

The bowling unit led by Ishant Sharma and Navdeep Saini appeared ordinary on a surface where Pondicherry’s seamers dominated. Delhi coach Devang Gandhi attributed the loss to the team not being “tough enough,” acknowledging Pondicherry’s excellent performance in all departments.

Gandhi emphasized the need for greater resilience in the upcoming matches and hinted at possible changes in the squad. With Ishant unavailable and Saini joining the India A squad, Delhi faces challenges, but Gandhi remains focused on returning with a stronger resolve for their next match against Jammu and Kashmir.
