David Warner, the former Australian opener, has been appointed captain of Karachi Kings for the 10th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Warner, who was Karachi’s top draft pick in January, takes over leadership duties from Shan Masood.
“We have a fantastic line-up and I’m super excited to take on the role of captain this year,” Warner said.
Team owner Salman Iqbal praised Warner’s leadership qualities and winning mentality, saying his “track record as leader and match-winner aligns perfectly with our vision.” He also acknowledged Shan Masood’s continued importance to the squad, calling him a “key player.”
Karachi Kings are aiming to turn their fortunes around after failing to qualify for the playoffs in the past three seasons. Since their maiden title win in 2020, the team has struggled to find consistency.
Warner’s appointment comes on the back of leading Sydney Thunder to the Big Bash League final in the 2024-25 season. His leadership ban, imposed in 2018 after the Cape Town ball-tampering incident, was lifted last year.
Linde and Carey Named as Replacements
Peshawar Zalmi have brought in South African allrounder George Linde as a full replacement for Corbin Bosch, who has opted out of the PSL to participate in the IPL.
Meanwhile, Islamabad United have signed Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey as a partial replacement for Rassie van der Dussen, who will miss part of the season due to personal reasons.
These replacements were confirmed during an online draft held on Monday.
Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings have also reserved replacement slots for Bangladesh fast bowler Nahid Rana and wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das respectively. Additionally, Quetta Gladiators and Karachi Kings have reserved spots for New Zealand batters Mark Chapman and Kane Williamson.
The 2025 PSL season kicks off on April 11 in Rawalpindi, with the final scheduled for May 18 in Lahore.
