Daruvala wins his first F2 race while Drugovich wins the F2 Championship

(Motorsports news) After a tough few races, Jehan Daruvala finally put together a masterclass in a calm and collected race to take his first victory of the season and his first victory for PREMA Racing in their home Grand Prix. While his rivals struggled under pressure, the Indian driver kept his cool from the start as he started from sixth all the way to win the race. It was a race about endurance and survival as Frederik Vesti navigated his way through the chaos around him to secure back-to-back podiums ahead of Ayumu Iwasa who later on got disqualified after the race.

Enzo Fittipaldi on the other hand put on a brilliant fightback through the order from 15th to fourth ahead of Dennis Hauger, who recovered in style from a drive-through-penalty for not having his tyres fitted before the formation lap. David Beckmann also held on to bring home a double points finish for Van Amersfoort Racing, crossing the line in front of newly F2 Champion Felipe Drugovich and his teammate Amaury Cordeel. Clément Novalak also added two points to his tally in ninth and Richard Verschoor had to settle for 10th.

Daruvala after his win said “A win in the Feature Race in Monza, I’m really, really happy. My first win of the year, also a Feature Race. It’s been a difficult year a lot of the time, so I’m very, very happy. We have a break now and it’s a good way to finish off, a podium yesterday and a win today in the main race. I can’t be more happy, big thanks to PREMA, we’ve been struggling in the past weeks and to bounce back strongly at their home race really means a lot to both of us.”

Felipe Drugovich sealed this year’s Formula 2 title despite watching the Monza sprint race from the pit wall. The race was won eventually by Jüri Vips as neither Drugovich or title rival Théo Pourchaire scored points during the sprint. Drugovich had a 69 point lead which was enough for  him to secure the title with three races remaining. It was Vips’ first win of the 2022 season as Frederick Vesti started the race on pole after the reverse grid having qualified 10th. Championship leader Felipe Drugovich started 12th on the grid after Sargeant had a poor start, dropping back immediately as he was passed by Vips and Ayumu Iwasa.

Drugovich collided with Amaury Cordeel on the exit of the Roggia chicane as Drugovich was forced wide onto grass and contact with Cordeel’s wheel breaking his suspension. Meanwhile Porchaire was able to pass first Sato but he could only climb to 12th. Drugovich watched on as Vips, Vesti and Daruvala took the chequered flag, but Drugovich had already secured the 2022 Formula 2 championship. He has led the 2022 F2 title since the second round in Jeddah and has not lost it ever since. Over the season he took four pole positions and set four fastest laps. He claimed four feature race victories in Jeddah, Barcelona, Monaco and Zandvoort and took the Barcelona sprint win as well for a perfect sweep of that round.
