In the 2023 Terra Wortmann Open's second round, top seed Daniil Medvedev will compete against World No. 65 Laslo Djere
Medvedev

(Tennis news) Marcos Giron was Daniil Medvedev’s opponent in this round. At the start of the first set, the former had a breakpoint but was able to hold serve by defending against it. After that, the Russian put more pressure on his opponent and won a break of serve to move ahead 3-2. For a final score of 4-2, Medvedev added a hold of serve. For the first set, he secured the advantage by maintaining it till the end of the set. The former World No. 1 was able to keep up with Giron until the middle of the second set, when the latter won four straight games to take the match 6-4, 6-3.

In the opening round, Oscar Otte, who was a local favourite, fought Laslo Djere. On serve, the two were unflappable the whole first set. At 6-5, the Serb did have three set points, but he fought back to maintain his serve and force a tie-break, which he eventually won. Following a challenging test in the first set, Djere played more freely and took control of the action in the second. A single break of serve in his favour effectively won him the match. In the sixth game, he broke Otte’s serve to take the lead 4-2 and went on to win the match 7-6 (3), 6-3.

Head-to-Head

The two have a 1-1 head-to-head draw after splitting their last two encounters evenly. At the 2022 French Open, Medvedev triumphed in their most recent meeting in straight sets.

Predictions

With Medvedev’s victory over Marcos Giron, Daniil Medvedev recorded his first victory on grass this year after going winless at the Libema Open last week. Additionally, it was his season-high 40th victory, moving him into first place on the ATP Tour in terms of match wins. In his victory over Giron, Medvedev won 67% of his first serve points and racked up nine aces. He avoided all three break points that he came up against and never once lost his serve.

With 23 consecutive wins and only eight unforced errors, Djere defeated Otte with some excellent play. It was also the first time in a single season that he had won two games on grass. On the surface though, a 5-10 record is nothing to be proud about just yet. Although Djere’s style of tennis is better suited to clay, Medvedev isn’t exactly a force to be reckoned with on grass. His opponents frequently get an opportunity to maneuver as a result of the latter’s surface-level ups and downs.

Despite a few early defeats, Medvedev has been remarkably consistent. He finished second here last year, and given his recent performance, he will be expected to win this match.
