(Tennis news) Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev continued his fantastic form with a 7-5 6-3 win over Jannik Sinner in the 2023 Miami Open final, in what was his fifth ATP Tour final in 5 tournaments. The 27 year old has now lost just one game in five events, which was to former World Number 1 Carlos Alcaraz at the Indian Wells. World number 5 Medvedev adopted a baseline approach, frustrating Sinner who couldn’t match the pace and intensity of the Russian. Such was Medvedev’s dominance that he wrapped up the match in one hour, 34 minutes.

The Russian has now won 24 games and lost one in the last five events and has won six out of six games against Jannik Sinner. Speaking after the match, Medvedev said “I’m really happy. Today was a tough match. It was probably the hottest day and the most humid during the day. It was not easy conditions.

“I don’t know if Jannik had a small injury or cramp. I was also struggling, trying not to show it. I haven’t won such a big title in probably a year and a half. At the end I was quite shaky. Not even tight, because I’m not scared to win. But still the hands get a little shaky so the serve is a little bit tougher… I managed to get myself together and close the match.”

In the women’s category, Petra Kvitova secured a 7-6 (14) 6-2 victory over Elena Rybakina in the Miami Open final to get back into the top 10 in the rankings. Rybakina was the favourite heading into the match and was looking to extend her 13 game winning streak but was not able to take a set off her Czech opponent. The opening set was closely contested and took more than 67 minutes with the pair going toe-to-toe to a tie break, which eventually settled 16-14. Kvitova then went on to cruise in the second set, winning it 6-3. The result ended Rybakina’s ambition of winning the ‘Sunshine Double’ after she won Indian Wells last month.
