(Cricket news) In the final Group B game in Muscat, hosts Oman were bowled out for a meagre score of 122 runs as Scotland eased into the T20 World Cup Super12 stage comfortably with three overs to spare and captain Kyle Coetzer getting back to some much needed form with 41 runs.

Scotland maintained their 100% record in the competition and topped Group B, ensuring it was the first time they have reached the second stage of the World Cup. They are now in Group 2 of the Super 12s alongside New Zealand, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Bangladesh finished second in Group B and are now alongside West Indies, Australia, South Africa and England.

The match could not have begun on a worse note for Oman as Jatinder Singh was dismissed in the second ball because of a run out as the Indian origin player hit the ball towards Mark Watt and attempted to take a run while his teammate Aqib Ilyas did not leave the crease. The hosts were soon reduced to 13-2 when George Munsey caught a flighted ball by Kashyap Prajapati as things went from bad to worse for Oman.

The introduction of Mohammed Nadeem settled things down for the hosts as his partnership with Aaqib Ilyas yielded 38 runs. However, Ilyas was soon dismissed for 37 runs off 35 balls which featured two sixes and three fours. Some economical bowling by Leask (2-13), Watt (1-23) and Chris Greaves (0-9 from two overs) ensured Oman maintained a low run rate and Nadeem was soon dismissed for 25 after being caught by Richie Berrington.

A captain’s performance by Zeeshan Maqsood (34) ensured Oman reached a total of 122 runs despite being eventually dismissed by Josh Davey (3-25) who took the wicket of Fayyaz Butt from the final ball of the innings. A solid 33-run opening partnership by Munsey and Coetzer ensured Scotland had a solid platform to build on despite the fact that Munsey was eventually dismissed for 20 runs.

Coetzer, who has not been in the best of form, ended the powerplay with a magnificent 91-metre six from the bowling of Maqsood before hitting another 84-metre shot in the next over. If that wasn’t enough, he smashed a 93-metre shot in the ninth over from Nadeem with the ball going out of the ground at deep mid-wicket. Unfortunately, just when Coetzer seemed to get going, he was dismissed for 41 runs off 28 deliveries by Khawar Ali (1-27).

With the score at 75-2, Matthew Cross and Berrington combined in style to guide their team to victory and assure a Super 12 spot at the World Cup. Cross scored an unbeaten 26 runs off 35 balls while Berrington surpassed Coetzer’s sixes with a 99-metre shot of his own and scored a total of 31 runs from 21 deliveries.
