Coco Gauff set to play Karolina Muchova at US Open 23

Gauff

(Tennis news) After defeating Laura Siegemund, Mirra Andreeva, Elise Mertens, and Caroline Wozniacki in New York, Gauff advanced to her second consecutive quarterfinal. For a chance to advance to the semifinals, she had to defeat 2017 French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko.

As she didn’t lose a single game throughout that time, Gauff just required 20 minutes to win the opening match. The American broke serve early in the second set, but Ostapenko broke back right away to finally tie the score.

Using yet another service break to extend his lead to 2-1, Gauff took control once more. Ostapenko was doing marginally better than previously, but was unable to defeat her adversary. For a 6-0, 6-2 victory, the teen won the final three games of the contest.

In order to advance to the last eight, where she faced Sorana Cirstea, Muchova defeated Storm Hunter, Magdalena Frech, Taylor Townsend, and Wang Xinyu. As she served her opponent a bagel to claim, the Czech player who had won the first set dominated.

In the second set, Muchova found herself down 2-0, but she quickly turned the tide. As she advanced to her second Grand Slam semifinal of the season, she won six of the following seven games to win 6-0, 6-3.

Head-to-Head

In their matchup, Gauff is ahead of Muchova 1-0. In the 2023 Western & Southern Open final, she defeated him in straight sets to win their previous match.

Predictions

Both defeated their respective opponents in the quarterfinals with convincing victories. Muchova made half as many unforced errors as she did winners—32. Gauff, on the other hand, was able to score 13 winners while only making 14 unintentional mistakes.

But Ostapenko made a lot of mistakes as a result of the teenager’s defence, so she didn’t need to do much. Just a few weeks ago in Cincinnati, Gauff and Muchova squared off, with the former winning the match and the title.

In that match, Muchova wasn’t physically at her best and was also a little concerned by the heat. She appears to be in good shape right now and has the ability to worry Gauff with her all-court game. The Czech’s secret weapon is her capacity to flawlessly combine a variety of shots.

Given her outstanding performance over the previous few weeks, Gauff’s early nervousness throughout these rounds could be attributed to expectations. Even if Muchova is pulling her all over the court with her shots, she will probably be able to get the majority of them back into play because she is one of the greatest when it comes to court coverage.

Compared to their previous battle, this one might prove to be more intensely competitive. Gauff is the favourite to win this match despite the fact that both players have played exceptionally well so far. Gauff has been the greatest player on the tour for the previous month.
