(Football news) Christopher Nkunku is set to sign a pre contract agreement with Chelsea in the coming days after the Blues agreed a deal with RB Leipzig for more than €60 million plus add ons. Fabrizio Romano confirmed the imminent agreement between Chelsea and RB Leipzig for Christopher Nkunku as the 24-year-old forward is set to sign a long-term deal with the Blues and join the club after the season ends in 2023. Chelsea are going to make the signing official in the coming days. The 24-year-old attacker who recently had to drop out of the France World Cup squad due to injury will go to London and complete his medical.
The rumours of Chelsea wanting Nkunku started in early October and reports started emerging about the two parties reaching a pre-contract agreement. The two clubs did not make any statement to accept or deny the speculation as other reports suggested that Nkunku probably wanted a move to Real Madrid. Those suggestions can now be disregarded as Chelsea are set to sign the 24-year-old attacker who is currently the leading scorer in this seasons’ Bundesliga. According to Fabrizio Romano, the deal could be upwards of €60 million. Nkunku will be marked as an excellent coup for Todd Boehly and he will be one of the key players in a budding project..
Chelsea were keen on securing a deal before the next summer transfer window since there could have been complications with his release clause. The French international signed a new contract with Leipzig before the season began, which subsequently included a €60 million release clause. Chelsea will now have to pay the release clauses in full when it’s triggered and they also want to spread the payment across several instalments. The West London team could use the January window to bring in players who fit in with the likes of Nkunku. Chelsea have several players identified for the next window as the influence of Christopher Vivell visible with the signing of the 24-year-old attacker.
Chelsea need Nkunku to be a success after a series of poor signings in attack in recent times, as the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner have all flopped at Stamford Bridge, while Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic have fared that much better. But with 35 goals last season, the France international certainly looks like an upgrade on these under-performing forwards, and many fans will hope that he is the missing piece in an underperforming Chelsea attack.
“The deal is agreed between all parties: Chelsea, Leipzig and the player with his agent Pini Zahavi. The agreement is there, it’s finally guaranteed now. I think it’s good business, Nkunku is an excellent player and many clubs wanted him; Graham Potter approved this signing too but the position he plays will depend on future signings, it’s too early to say right now.”
