Casper Ruud set to take on Holger Rune in the French Open

(Tennis news) Fourth seeded Casper Rudd in the 4th round battled to defeat Nicolas Jarry of Chile. After winning the first set in a tiebreak, Ruud had to overcome deficits in the following two sets.

The Norwegian, Casper Rud came back from 4-1 and 4-2 deficits in the second and third sets to win 7-6(5), 7-5, and 7-5 in three hours and twenty minutes. Now, he has advanced to consecutive quarter finals at Roland Garros. Despite being outhit by Jarry (56-32) in terms of winners, Ruud nonetheless managed to save 14 of 17 break points.The 24-year-old now has a record of 20-11 for the year and 17-5 at Roland Garros after winning 10 of the previous 11 matches.

The sixth-ranked Holger Rune defeated Francisco Cerundolo in a thrilling five-set match on Monday in the fourth round. The match experienced its fair share of peaks and valleys, particularly during a thrilling fifth set.  

The defending Munich Open champion won the first set after a tiebreak, but his opponent later tied the match before claiming the third set. Despite wasting three break opportunities at 4-4, Cerundolo only dropped one game in a lopsided fourth set.

Rune gained a break in the ninth game but was unable to serve out the match before triumphing in the next tiebreak. After falling up 5-3, he came back to win 7-1 at Roland Garros and improve to 30-10 in 2023. 

Head-to-Head

Although Rune has triumphed in his last matchup, which took place in the Rome semifinals three weeks ago, Ruud has prevailed in four of their five encounters.

Predictions

Rune and Ruud are both fundamentally baseliners with somewhat similar playing philosophies. Both have strong serves, forceful swings from either flank, and good movement. On clay, where Ruud typically plays his best tennis, he is only slightly superior. On the surface, the Norwegian has a 114-42 record and nine of his ten titles.

On clay, Rune has been a work in progress, going 35-21 while taking home two trophies. He has won 15 out of his 18 games this season, which is an outstanding improvement. However, the two players have travelled quite different paths to the last eight, with Ruud winning in straight sets and Rune needing all five sets. In the 2022 Roland Garros quarter finals Casper Ruud defeated Rune.  Even though Rune won in their previous encounter which was Rome, Ruud should win this match.
