(Tennis news) Carlos Alcaraz defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-3 6-2 in the Indian Wells final, thereby securing his third ATP Masters 1000 title without facing a break point. The result meant that the Spaniard reclaimed his World Number 1 ranking which was taken by Novak Djokovic in January. Alcaraz had previously faced Medvedev at Wimbledon in 2021, winning that match as well and adopted a patient but aggressive approach this time around to secure a straight set victory.

The teenager took control of the match with an immediate break in both the sets, taking a 3-0 lead in the first and he won the first 10 points in the second set, going on to take a 4-0 advantage. It was a pretty comfortable victory for Alcaraz while Medvedev struggled to replicate the form that saw the Russian overcome Francis Tiafoe in the semi-finals. The Spaniard hit 18 winners compared to Medvedev’s 5 and used drop shots to his advantage as Medvedev was in a deep position throughout the match.

Alcaraz has now joined compatriot Rafael Nadal by becoming only the 2nd teenager to win his third ATP 1000 title without facing a break point. He will now aim to win his fourth title at the Miami Open but will still be two behind Rafael Nadal, who had five by the age of 20. In the post match interview, Alcaraz said “I’m playing great. Of course today, the conditions today were pretty tough. Daniil didn’t play at his best, obviously. All I can say is I’m really happy with my performance, the way that I was playing this tournament. I’m looking forward to playing at this level in Miami as well.”
