(Cricket News) The first Indian fast bowler to top the ICC Test bowlers’ rankings is Jasprit Bumrah, who moved up three spots to take the No. 1 spot. Bumrah had previously been ranked No. 3, and the highest ranking held by an Indian fast bowler was No. 2, held by Kapil Dev between December 1979 and February 1980 on the retrospective Test bowlers’ table. In addition to Bumrah, Zaheer Khan also held the No. 3 spot in October-November 2010.

Bumrah’s ascent comes after he was named Player of the Match in the second Test match between India and England in Visakhapatnam, where he amassed ninety-one wickets in an innings of 143. In the first innings, he picked up his tenth five-for in just his 34th Test match, a match in which he finished as the fastest Indian to 150 Test wickets.

He started India on top with a spell of two-way reverse swing, firstly forcing Joe Root to edge to slip before destroying Ollie Pope with a blistering in swinging yorker to destroy both middle and leg stumps. Later, he dismissed Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow to give India a 143-run lead in the first innings.

Bumrah was also influential in the second innings, taking 3 for 46. With Ben Foakes and Tom Hartley posing a threat to India’s hopes of a 399-run chase, Bumrah had Foakes caught and bowled, foxing him with a slower off-cutter.

With 15 strikes at 10.67, Bumrah is currently the series’ top wicket-taker, having claimed six in the first Test in Hyderabad, which India lost by 28 runs. Meanwhile, India’s opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made significant gains among Test batters, moving up 37 places to No. 29 after recording a career-best knock of 209 in Visakhapatnam.

Meanwhile, England’s Zak Crawley had a strong Test, too, scoring 76 and 73 to move up eight spots to No. 22. With two centuries in the first Test match against South Africa at Mount Maunganui, Kane Williamson remains the leading Test batsman.
