(Cricket News) In preparation for their upcoming eight-match limited-overs home series against Australia later this month, South Africa has introduced the young batting talent Dewald Brevis to both their One-Day and Twenty20 International squads.

Aged 20 and nicknamed “Baby AB” in honor of the immensely powerful batter AB de Villiers, Brevis has displayed his prowess with a remarkable record. He holds the highest score in South Africa’s domestic T20 cricket, amassing an impressive 162 runs from just 57 balls. His excellence extended to the 2022 Under-19 World Cup, where he emerged as the leading run-scorer.

Notably, Brevis has garnered experience from his participation in the Indian Premier League with the Mumbai Indians, a factor that might position him favorably for selection in the senior 50-over World Cup, scheduled to take place in India later this year.

Joining Brevis as uncapped players in the T20 squad are wicketkeeper-batter Donovan Ferreira, fast bowler Gerald Coetzee, and batter Matthew Breetzke.

Rob Walter, the coach of South Africa’s limited-overs team, articulated the rationale behind these selections, stating, “We are seeking opportunities to broaden our pool of players, and the T20 series against Australia presents an ideal chance to give emerging talents in the country the platform to showcase their abilities. These individuals have consistently delivered at the domestic level and possess skill sets that align with our strategic approach.”

While seasoned campaigners like Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Anrich Nortje, and Kagiso Rabada have been rested for the T20 series, they are set to return for the ODIs.
