(Cricket News) In the second Test of the two-match series, the West Indies upset Australia by eight runs on Day 4 at The Gabba in Brisbane. Australia needed to win by 156 runs with eight wickets remaining, but Shamar Joseph’s amazing figures of 7/68 blew them away. As a result of their victory, the Windies won their first Test in Australia in 27 years and also caused Australia to lose in a day-night Test for the first time.
After the historic victory, West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite gave an explanation of what spurred his team to write a dramatic comeback story in the series.
The 31-year-old said that the hard criticism they received from former Australia fast bowler Rodney Hogg—who had called their team hopeless and pathetic and likened them to the West Indies of old—after they lost the first game by ten wickets was what motivated them to win the second Test.
“Let us not beat around the bush: They were hopeless (in Adelaide). We should have two divisions now. We cannot have these weak sides coming out here. Mitchell Starc with a brand-new pink ball, is going to run straight through them (at the Gabba).
So, I would not think the game would go any further than three days. They are pathetic,” Hogg had told 10 News. “I must say we had two words that inspired us in this Test match. That was our inspiration. We wanted to show the world we are not pathetic,” Brathwaite said during the post-match press conference.
“Nowadays, the West Indies would be rushing past in overcoats, but back in the day, when we were stretching out on the ground and they were running past in Speedos, I was like, ‘Wow, look at their muscles,'” he continued.
